How does your body recognize what is happening in your environment? In this special interactive exhibit, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students will join Dr. Helena Carvalho will demonstrate the special senses:

• Variations in light and contrasting patterns help create optical illusions that can trick the visual system.

• The auditory system detects sound vibration, and an ear on each side of the head allows us to identify the location of sounds.

• Taste and smell, which are closely related, are the chemical senses.

• Touch is more than using our fingertips to feel things—which is why we don’t allude to only five senses. Our skin helps us to recognize differences in temperature, vibrations, texture, pressure, and pain.
