The basal ganglia are made of four discrete functional modules. These modules are critical for the initiation, selection, and chunking of goal-oriented movement in health. In pathological conditions, depending on how these modules are compromised, different forms of motor, cognitive, and emotional disorders can be produced. In this lecture, Dr. Kim will present the principles by which these modules operate. Understanding these principles, medical students will be able to reason the causes, symptoms, and treatment options of a variety of movement disorders—including Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and hemiballismus—that arise from dysfunctional basal ganglia.
