  • Where Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, M106

The first 1,000 days—from conception to two years—are now recognized as the most critical days in human brain development. Our understanding of this fundamental period, however, is severely hampered by the lack of safe, noninvasive tools that can provide insight into relevant biological processes. The Fetal Neonatal and Developmental Science Center was formed to create a multidisciplinary environment that would foster the development of tools and analysis streams to enable better understanding of normal and abnormal early brain development. In her talk, Dr. Grant will discuss advances in magnetic resonance imaging, near-infrared spectroscopy, magnetoencephalography, and informatics that are moving the science of early human brain development forward.
