Within Reach to focus on accessibility of health care careers
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, along with the Jefferson College of Health Sciences and Virginia Western Community College are teaming up to present an evening filled with information about how to pursue a health care career.
Within Reach will be held Monday, November 23, at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine at 2 Riverside Circle in Roanoke. An information fair at 6:00 p.m. will be followed by formal presentations at 6:30 p.m.
“Many health professions are in high demand these days,” said David Trinkle, associate dean for community and culture at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “Within Reach will introduce community members to the breadth of health care education and training programs available in the Roanoke Valley. And this isn’t just the case for high school and college students. It is entirely doable for many mid-level professionals in other careers to make the switch to health care.”
During the program, school representatives will highlight more than 30 academic programs, including those that lead to a certificate in surgical technology, an associate degree in such fields as occupational therapy assistant, a bachelor’s degree in a range of fields, a master’s degree in such fields as nursing, a medical degree, or a doctorate.
Among the speakers will be Carole Graham, dean of health professions at Virginia Western Community College; Judith McKeon, director of admissions at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences; Stephen Workman, associate dean for admissions at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine; and Audra Van Wart, co-director of Virginia Tech’s Translational biology, Medicine, and Health Programs.
Participants will learn about admission requirements, academic preparation, and financial aid, among other topics. Ample time will be available to ask questions or speak with school representatives afterward.
Within Reach is geared toward high school and college students and early- and mid-level professionals. Family members, teachers, school counselors, military personnel, and community and church leaders are also encouraged to attend.
Within Reach is a free event, and no advance registration is required. Free parking is available in the nearby lot and garage.
