SA-4401 Student Health

1.0        Purpose

To ensure Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) students have timely access to comprehensive, high-quality, and confidential healthcare services that support their physical well-being throughout their medical education. This policy outlines the availability of primary, specialty, and urgent care services; the process for accessing those services; and the expectations regarding confidentiality and insurance coverage.

2.0        Guideline

VTCSOM students are eligible to receive comprehensive primary medical care through the VT Health Sciences & Technology Campus Student Health Center, with services comparable to those at Schiffert Health Center in Blacksburg. Students may choose to receive care through this facility or independently establish a relationship with a primary care provider of their choice within or outside of the Carilion Clinic system. All healthcare providers involved in student care are prohibited from participating in academic assessment of students, ensuring clear separation between healthcare and academic evaluation.

3.0        Providers

Student Health/Primary Medical Care/Specialty Care 

Comprehensive primary care services are offered to all VTCSOM students at the VT Health Sciences & Technology (HS&T) Campus Student Health Center currently located at Carilion Clinic Community Care located at 1229 Third Street SW in Roanoke, which provides similar services as can be found at the Schiffert Student Health Center in Blacksburg.

• The HS&T Student Health Center is within walking distance (less than 1 mile) from the Riverside campus and is also on the Valley Metro Star Line trolley service (take the Jefferson and Walnut stop and walk approximately 3 blocks to the clinic).
• Carilion Guest Services will also continue to provide transportation to and from the new location for students. When you need to be seen at student health, call for an appointment at 540-512-5200.
• Once you have your appointment time, call guest services at 540-529-1220 and set up a time for pick up on the Riverside campus.
• Appointments can be made throughout the day Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time. Basic services (general office visits and routine labs) are covered by the VT Student Health Fee.
• All other services (other labs, procedures, x-rays, immunizations) will be billed to the student's health insurance in the usual manner. 

Students are allowed to forego student health services and establish care with a primary care physician. Students have the option of choosing their primary care physician from among the Carilion Clinic primary care practices or outside of Carilion Clinic. All physicians in the Carilion Clinic system accept the Virginia Tech graduate student medical insurance coverage as well as other commercial insurance plans. 

Students also have access to the specialty network of Carilion Clinic with referrals coordinated through Carilion Family Medicine/VT Student Health or their primary healthcare provider. 

Student health providers at Carilion Family Medicine/VT Student Health and primary care providers outside of Carilion Clinic are not involved in any way with student assessment. For students who elect a primary care practice or a specialist within Carilion Clinic, our Conflict of Interest policy and attestation will serve to assure that physicians with whom a conflict of interest is identified will not be placed in a position of assessing the student. 

All records of visits are confidential and can be released only with the written permission of the student.  

Urgent Medical Care

Velocity Care can provide current VTCSOM students with urgent care needs. They will bill the insurance company directly so that students do not have to pay out of pocket upfront. Velocity Care accepts the Virginia Tech graduate student medical insurance coverage as well as other commercial insurance plans. 

Velocity Care offers extended and weekend hours that can be of benefit to medical students with hectic schedules. However, Velocity Care should not be relied on as primary care providers.
