Position Responsibilities

Mutcheson oversees the further development of the school’s assessment and program evaluation initiatives and advises curriculum directors on assessment methodologies. He works with stakeholders across the institution to support data-driven decision-making and contribute to educational scholarship endeavors.

Professional Background

Mutcheson joined the medical school in 2016 as director of assessment and program evaluation after serving in several teaching and leadership positions and earning his Ph.D. in educational research and evaluation with a dual focus on applied statistics and measurement from Virginia Tech.  While completing his graduate studies, he primarily worked as a research analyst in Virginia Tech’s Office of Assessment and Evaluation. He was also the lead graduate researcher investigating the implementation of Virginia’s new teaching evaluation system and a research analyst for the NSF-funded Appalachian Information Technology Extension Services. His primary research interests are in the applications of quantitative methods, especially modern measurement models to understand and inform educational policy.
