Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is growing. The dean says this year's match day reflects the program's progress since students first walked the halls in 2010.

A room was filled with hugs and smiles. A smile was planted on Ryan Duffy's face when he found out some good news.

"It was kind of a combination between shocked and excited, I've always wanted to go to Duke, I've worked there in the past and always dreamed of being a doctor at Duke, so I just never imagined that it would be possible," Ryan Duffy, a Virginia Tech Carilion Medical Student, said.

He matched to his first choice: Internal Medicine Residency at Duke University.

"This year was an incredibly successful match day for us, we will have 37 students to graduate and all 37 of them matched," Dr. Aubrey Knight, Senior Dean for Student Affairs at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, said.

The Dean says this school has come a long way since its first class started 9 years ago.

"The strength of the programs, the number of interviews our students are getting, the types of programs their matching into, seems to be improving with every passing year," Dr. Knight said.

He says with each success, the school has also been attracting stronger applicants.

"We will be able to continue to grow and succeed and have conversations about the new bar being set in subsequent years," Dr. Knight said.
