The accident on the road to Alghero.
He had returned to Alghero to enjoy a well deserved rest but, for Dario Sorrentino, an internationally known doctor with active collaborations in several US clinics, the drama took place on the outskirts of the city where he was born. Sorrentino was professor of medicine and director of the Center for Inflammatory Intestinal Diseases (IBD) at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Specialized in Gastroenterology at the University of Sassari in 1987, was appointed assistant professor at the Mount Sinai Medical School of New York – Divisions of GI and Liver Diseases, where he spent 7 years. During that time he conducted basic research studies on the cell membrane transport. Upon his return to Udine, he was in charge of the Gastroenterology Unit of the university hospital e from 2005 he held the professorships of Medicine and then Gastroenterology.
The discovery.
Together with the research group he succeeded in demonstrate for the first time, which infliximab effectively prevents postoperative recurrence of the Crohn’s disease, results widely replicated and now an integral part of most guidelines around the world.
The accident.
The doctor died this morning ending up under the bus with his bike along the provincial road 55, which connects Alghero with Porto Conte, at the beach of Mugoni.
