Professional Background

John A. Jane, Jr., M.D., earned his B.A. (cum laude) from the University of Chicago and his M.D. from the University of Virginia. He completed neurosurgery residency training at the University of Virginia, followed by fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he served as Chief Fellow in Pediatric Neurosurgery.

After fellowship, he joined the University of Virginia faculty in 2004 and practiced there for nearly two decades, serving in leadership roles including Residency Program Director, inpatient and outpatient medical director, Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery, and co-director of neuroendocrine services. In June 2023, he became inaugural Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Carilion Clinic/Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

At Carilion, Dr. Jane’s clinical focus is the care of patients with pituitary and parasellar tumors. He is a nationally recognized academic neurosurgeon whose scholarly work has been cited more than 11,000 times (h-index 58). He has authored 185 peer-reviewed publications and has served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery.
