Position Responsibilities

The Associate Dean for Student Affairs provides leadership for student support and engagement at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. This role ensures that students have access to the guidance, resources, and services needed to thrive academically, professionally, and personally throughout medical school.

Student Affairs oversees academic support, career advising (Road to Residency), student wellness and health, conduct and professionalism processes, financial aid, scholarships and awards, disability services, housing support, student organizations, and major ceremonies and events. The office also maintains the Student Handbook and related policies and oversees preparation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) in coordination with the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education.

Working in close collaboration with academic and institutional partners, the Associate Dean advocates for students, promotes a positive and respectful learning environment, and supports student development from matriculation through graduation. The Associate Dean serves as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Team and contributes to institutional strategy and leadership.

Professional Background

Dr. Murchison graduated from medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2000. She then completed an Obstetrics and Gynecology residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 2004. She joined Carilion Clinic in 2007 after gaining private practice experience in Colorado. Dr. Murchison is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Professor at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Clinically, she enjoys practicing all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. She sees women for preventative care, contraceptive counseling and routine and high-risk prenatal care. She also helps women who are dealing with abnormal uterine bleeding, pelvic pain and menopausal symptoms. When her patients require surgery, she is able to perform both minor and major gyn surgeries including hysterectomies. Dr. Murchison appreciates the continuity that being an obstetrician/ gynecologist allows as she enjoys getting to know her patients over the years. Dr. Murchison is committed to medical students and resident education and career advising.  She is currently the Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Carilion Clinic.
