Elvis Pagan, MD
Position Responsibilities
As Director of Clinical Skills (Phase 1) at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM), Dr. Elvis Pagan provides strategic leadership for the design, implementation, and integration of the pre-clerkship clinical skills curriculum. He ensures that early clinical training is intentionally aligned with foundational science education, helping students connect basic science concepts to patient-centered practice through the development of clinical reasoning, physical examination skills, and effective communication.
Dr. Pagan works closely with the Associate Dean for Clinical Science to ensure that the Phase I curriculum advances the broader mission of VTCSOM and prepares students for success in clerkships and electives. He partners extensively with directors and faculty of the Integrated Foundational Sciences (IFS) course to translate theoretical knowledge into meaningful clinical application.
In addition, Dr. Pagan collaborates with the standardized patient program to create realistic, structured clinical encounters that allow learners to build skills in a safe and supportive environment. He also works alongside the Director of Ultrasound to incorporate point-of-care imaging as a tool to reinforce physical examination skills, make anatomy visible, and strengthen diagnostic reasoning.
