Update to Medical School Tuition

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s 2026 Special Session provided Virginia Tech with an initial $6.5 million in base General Fund support beginning in fiscal year 2027 to support enrollment growth, development of accelerated study pathways, and lower tuition for Virginia resident students at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). This is the first direct appropriation of General Fund support for VTCSOM.

In April 2026, the Board of Visitors approved a fiscal year 2027 tuition rate of $63,985 for both resident and nonresident medical students. Consistent with the commonwealth’s investment to improve affordability for Virginians, Virginia Tech proposed to the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors at their August 24-26 meeting to establish a new lower tuition rate for Virginia residents beginning in Fall 2026 to achieve the legislative intent. The proposal was approved and reduces the resident tuition rate by $15,000, resulting in a new resident tuition rate of $48,985 for Fall 2026, or $24,492.50 per semester, for all Virginia residents currently enrolled in the VTCSOM.

Is the tuition rate for out-of-state students changing?
No, the tuition rate for out-of-state students remains unchanged, since the Commonwealth of Virginia does not provide funding for non-resident student tuition.

How much is tuition being reduced for Virginia resident students at VTCSOM?
Annual tuition for Virginia resident students at VTCSOM is being reduced by $15,000, from $63,985 to $48,985 per year, or $24,492.50 per semester.

Since Fall 2026 tuition has already been billed at the previously approved semester rate of $31,992.50, Virginia resident students will see a $7,500 reduction in their fall tuition bill. Spring 2027 tuition will be billed at $24,492.50 for the semester for Virginia resident students.

How will the tuition reduction be implemented?
Students do not need to take any action. Since Fall 2026 tuition has already been billed, Virginia residents will see a reduction of $7,500 applied to their account. The charge reduction will apply to students’ accounts within a few business days, but it will take several more business days to allow Financial Aid to adjust awards as necessary and then process a refund if due.  Refunds should be processed in approximately 2 weeks.

Will students receive a refund?
Please note that not all students will receive refunds, as this is dependent on their payment method.  For instance, those paying with aid, such as student loans, would have that aid reduced accordingly to reflect the new rates, which may not result in a refund.

Is there any additional support for currently enrolled Virginia residents who paid full tuition in previous years at VTCSOM?
The university has approved a one-time FY27 scholarship for Virginia residents currently enrolled at VTCSOM. The scholarship amounts are based on students’ current year in the medical school program:

  • M4 Virginia resident students: $45,000 one-time scholarship
  • M3 Virginia resident students: $30,000 one-time scholarship
  • M2 Virginia resident students: $15,000 one-time scholarship

These awards will be applied to student accounts within approximately 2 weeks.
