Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine represents a new approach to medical education. A unique, public-private partnership between a cutting-edge research university and a major health care institution, the school educates physician thought leaders through inquiry, research, and discovery.
At the same time its curriculum provides an exemplary education in the basic and clinical sciences, the school transcends the traditional medical education model in several ways. Its patient-centered curriculum, for example, trains students to make patients their central focus. Rather than learning passively, they interact with clinic patients and analyze real-life cases in facilitator-guided, small-group discussions. Through this approach, students learn both the science of medicine and the art of caring for patients.
The school also emphasizes health systems science and interprofessional practice. Medical students take classes with nursing, physician assistant, and allied health students, an experience that helps prepare them to thrive in multidisciplinary teams and to deliver high-quality care. Finally, the school provides instruction in the principles, methods, and ethics of basic, clinical, and translational research throughout the curriculum.
Through its entire approach, the School capitalizes on Virginia Tech’s world-class strength in basic sciences, bioinformatics, and engineering and leverages Carilion Clinic’s highly experienced medical staff and rich history in medical education to train the next generation of physician thought leaders.
