Faculty Association and Governance

VTC School of Medicine Faculty Association

Faculty governance is a vibrant, strong tradition of Virginia Tech.  It is a guiding principle of Virginia Tech’s shared governance that the faculty and the administration shall collaborate in major decisions affecting the academic welfare of the university.  Consistent with this principle, the purpose of the VTCSOM faculty association is to foster the involvement of faculty in School and University affairs.  The faculty association is the legislative body of the faculty; through the association come the rules and processes by which faculty self-governance takes place, consistent with the policies and procedures of the faculty handbook at Virginia Tech.

The faculty association includes all faculty members, regardless of category or rank.  VTCSOM bylaws stipulate that the faculty association meets formally at least once during each academic year.  Called meetings can also occur under certain circumstances.  The primary method of faculty participation in School and university governance is through standing committees, to which faculty may be elected by peers and/or appointed by the Dean.  The Academic Committee serves as the chief oversight faculty committee and also functions as the Executive Committee of the faculty association.
