Interviews are offered monthly on the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine campus in Roanoke, Virginia, on seven Saturdays throughout the fall and winter months.
Interview Days allow interviewees the opportunity to meet key leaders from the school’s faculty and administration. Interview Day activities include presentations about the school’s curriculum, an overview and tour of facilities, an orientation to the interview process, and lunch, as well as the actual interviews.
All interviewees should plan to be on campus from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m.
A Friday evening reception is held near the school for all interviewing students. These receptions give interviewees the opportunity to meet with admissions staff and current Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine students.
Multiple Mini-Interview Process
The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine uses the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) process using predetermined scenarios. Applicants rotate through nine interview stations that last eight minutes each and one traditional interview station that lasts 18 minutes. No prior medical knowledge is required for the MMI.
During the MMI process, interviewers evaluate applicants, within the context of their respective scenario, to determine the interviewees’ potential to develop into excellent physicians and researchers.

During the MMI, teams of interviewees rotate through the nine scenario stations. In each station, an interviewer poses a single, predeveloped scenario question to each interviewee. The structured scenario questions are designed to help evaluate behavioral competencies through the question’s theme, such as communication, ethical and moral judgment, management, problem-solving, responsibility, and teamwork. The MMI process can also help assess the interviewees’ ability to function in team settings, an important skill for the school’s small-group learning curriculum.

The MMI interviewers are a mix of clinicians, administrators, and members of the Roanoke community who have been trained in the MMI interviewing technique.
The MMI interview technique was originally developed and implemented by McMaster University in Ontario.
