Dr. Jon Sweet to assume Interim Chair role for Internal Medicine

Dear VTCSOM Community,

Last month, Dr. Jon Sweet assumed the role of interim chair of internal medicine for Carilion Clinic and the VTC School of Medicine.   This followed news that the former chair, Dr. Paul Skolnik, would be stepping down to focus on some pressing family issues and pursue new opportunities outside of Carilion. We are grateful to Dr. Skolnik for his dedication, accomplishments, and more than five years of service to the department of medicine and the medical school.  We wish him the very best in his future endeavors.

Times of transition are often associated with unease and uncertainty, even without a pandemic underfoot. I have full confidence that Dr. Sweet and his leadership team will steward the transition well and create a strong sense of stability and direction.  Prospective chair candidates will see a strong and vibrant department that contributes a lot to the tripartite mission of patient care, education and research, and that supports the strategic objectives of both Carilion Clinic and the VTC School of Medicine.
