The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s Art Exhibition Spring 2013 features photographs and sketches with a range of subjects, from landscapes to cityscapes, from braying zebras to dancing egrets, from scenes of nature to babes cradled in tattooed arms.

The exhibition will open on March 20 with a public reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the school’s atrium at 2 Riverside Circle in Roanoke.

During the reception, the school will also host a complement to More to Live For: An Evening Inspired by the Life of Michael Brecker. The film—which will be screened at the Jefferson Center on March 22, followed by a tribute performance featuring saxophonist Branford Marsalis and pianist Joey Calderazzo—chronicles the lives of the late jazz great Michael Brecker and two other men with leukemia. Its showings have inspired countless audience members to join the International Bone Marrow Registry. As part of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s collaboration with community arts organizations and in advance of the tribute performance, during the art show the school will host cheek swabbing for all those interested in joining the registry.

The upcoming exhibition is the school’s fifth, presented as part of the Creativity in Health Education Program, an initiative dedicated to using art to expand the social, cultural, and humanistic awareness of the school’s students, faculty, and staff. The program, which sponsors two art exhibitions a year, also aims to involve community members in the life of the school.
