Special match up to benefit Harrington scholarship fund

It will be something other than your ordinary basketball game when two special teams go head to head in the Patrick Henry High School gymnasium in February. Medical students at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will face off against a team of Carilion Clinic residents and attending physicians to raise money to benefit the school’s Morgan Dana Harrington Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The second annual Docs for Morgan event honors the memory of Morgan Harrington, who worked at the school for a summer before returning to Virginia Tech for her junior year of study. She is remembered for her kind heart, exuberant laugh, and can-do spirit.

“Last year’s event was successful on many levels,” said Dr. Tracey Criss, a psychiatrist at Carilion Clinic and the school’s assistant dean for clinical science for years three and four. “We’re looking forward to the same kind of friendly competitive spirit this time. Teams are already in place, and we’re hoping for a large crowd to cheer them on.”

Criss said last year’s audience was enthusiastic. “Cheering sections kept the crowd on its feet, and some fans even showed up with their faces painted.”

This year, the Hidden Valley High School pep band will be on hand to add to the excitement. A silent auction will accept bids on various sports equipment such as autographed basketballs.

Docs for Morgan will be held Monday, February 3, 2014 at 7:15 p.m. Admission is free. Patrick Henry High School is located at 2102 Grandin Road, S.W. in Roanoke.
