Dr. Rebecca Pauly named Interim Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education

Dear Colleagues,

Effective November 15, 2021 Dr. Rebecca R. Pauly, MD, FACP has been named Interim Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education in the VTC School of Medicine. Her interim duties will include essentially the same portfolio of responsibilities provided by Dr. Vari prior to his retirement.

Dr. Pauly is Professor of Medicine and Vice Chair of Education in the Department of Internal Medicine. She joined VTCSOM and Carilion Clinic in 2019 and became immediately engaged in both clinical and academic work. In 2020, Dr. Pauly received the TEACH Feedback Award from VTCSOM and Carilion Clinic for her involvement with both learners and faculty in enhancing feedback skills. In 2020-21, Dr. Pauly served as co-chair of the VTCSOM Strategic Planning Committee with Dr. Musick. She currently chairs the VTCSOM Academic Committee to which our other faculty governance committees report, as well as serving as advisor of our chapter of the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science.

Dr. Pauly’s 22 years of administrative experience at academic health centers includes roles leading programs in medical and health professions education, faculty development, and equity and diversity. At University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Medicine (2013-19) she was Professor of Medicine and Biomedical and Health Informatics, Associate Dean for Faculty Development, and Director of the Master's in Health Professions Education Program. At the University of Florida (UF) Dr. Pauly was Associate Vice President for Health Affairs for Equity and Diversity at the UF Health Science Center (2007-2013), Vice Chair for Medical Education in the Department of Medicine (1999-2013) and Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine (1999-2007).

Dr. Pauly graduated with a BA cum laude from Vanderbilt University and earned her MD from the University of Alabama - Birmingham School of Medicine. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, and research fellowship in Vascular Biology at the National Institutes of Health. She has maintained an active practice of inpatient and outpatient internal medicine with recognition for excellence noted by inclusion in Best Doctors in America from 2007 to present and selection for membership in the Gold Humanism Honors Society. Her national profile includes completion of Drexel’s Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine® program (ELAM) and election as Steering Committee Chair for the AAMC’s Group on Women in Medicine and Science (GWIMS).
