Rotation Settings

Students at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine are fortunate to have a variety of educational and research training opportunities, including clinical experiences, clerkships, electives, LACE preceptorships and research experiences, throughout Roanoke and its surrounding communities.

VTCSOM students are responsible for their transportation to academic, clinical, and research-related activities. In many situations, public transportation (trolleys, buses, taxi cabs, Uber, or the VT-VTC campus shuttle) will be adequate, but having a personal vehicle will minimize schedule issues and increase convenience.

Inpatient Rotation Settings

Students spend the majority of their inpatient rotations at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. One of the largest hospitals in the state, the 825-bed facility recently completed a large expansion project, adding a new emergency department, labor and delivery unit, and the Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital. Now in its second century of providing premiere healthcare services, the hospital also features a Level I Trauma Center supported by one of the first fully integrated patient transport services in the country.

In addition, Carilion Clinic has an affiliation agreement with the Salem Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Salem, Virginia, to serve as an additional site for training. This medical center, only about a 15-minute drive from the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, provides services to more than 112,500 veterans living in a 26-county area of Southwest Virginia and serves as a training site in surgery, internal medicine, psychiatry, family medicine, and ophthalmology.

Outpatient Rotation Settings

Carilion Clinic is the largest multispecialty physician practice, including the largest primary care group, in Virginia. Carilion’s primary care division consists of more than 200 physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in 70 offices across western Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Offices are equipped with onsite laboratory, imaging services, and minor procedure rooms. The practices offer family-centered medical and prenatal care, diagnostics, and minor surgery. A common electronic medical record is implemented at all locations.

Carilion Clinic's primary care providers manage chronic conditions and develop a healthier lifestyle for patients through patient education, disease prevention, and counseling services. Building on the inpatient clinical experience, the school’s outpatient rotations allow students to participate firsthand in continuity of care.
