Financial Aid

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is strongly committed to its financial aid program and the principle that a student's financial resources should not be a barrier to enrollment.

The school offers a competitive financial aid package, including institutional scholarships and federal loans. Students have access to Title IV federal Direct Loans through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as well as other private/alternative student loan programs.

Students are normally eligible to borrow up to the full cost of attendance if needed.

The Office of Financial Aid provides assistance to prospective and matriculated medical students and alumni with the financial aid application process, individual budgeting, loan repayment options, and debt management.

Important Update Regarding Virginia Resident Tuition and Scholarships

The Commonwealth of Virginia’s 2026 Special Session provided Virginia Tech with an initial $6.5 million in base General Fund support beginning in fiscal year 2027 to support enrollment growth, development of accelerated study pathways, and lower tuition for Virginia resident students at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). This is the first direct appropriation of General Fund support for VTCSOM. 

In April 2026, the Board of Visitors approved a fiscal year 2027 tuition rate of $63,985 for both resident and nonresident medical students. Consistent with the commonwealth’s investment to improve affordability for Virginians, Virginia Tech proposed to the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors at their August 24-26 meeting to establish a new lower tuition rate for Virginia residents beginning in Fall 2026 to achieve the legislative intent. The proposal was approved and reduces the resident tuition rate by $15,000, resulting in a new resident tuition rate of $48,985 for Fall 2026, or $24,492.50 per semester, for all Virginia residents currently enrolled in the VTCSOM.  Learn more here.
