Cost of Attendance
The Cost of Attendance is used to calculate a student’s financial aid eligibility and to set the maximum limit of financial aid. The estimated cost of attendance figures, as established by the Office of Financial Aid, should help you plan your fiscal budgeting for the academic years to come. Great care has been taken to calculate a fair student cost of attendance, reflecting the average living costs for a single student in the Roanoke Valley area.
Tuition and fees are the same for both Virginia and out-of-state residents. The table below provides a breakdown of the tuition and fees for the 2022/2023 M1-M4 academic year. Please note, the Cost of Attendance is updated annually to reflect the current academic year’s billed and unbilled costs.

Notes Regarding Cost of Attendance
Students are required to have a laptop computer. Minimum specifications will be provided prior to matriculation. Students who wish to purchase a new laptop have access to VTC’s Dell and Apple purchase plans. All first year VTC students will be provided up to $2,000.00 in their cost of attendance calculations with proper documentation of their computer expense. This allowance will not be made available to M2-M4 students, as all other expenses are projected per year. Technology support services are provided at no cost to students through both the Carilion Clinic Technology Support Group for all Carilion related services and Virginia Tech's 4-HELP for Virginia Tech related services.
All students will be required to carry health insurance. If you already have a health insurance plan, you will be able to keep it and proof of insurance must be submitted to the Office of Enrollment Management. A range of individual and group plans are made available to students attending the school. The Virginia Tech Graduate Student Health Plan for an individual, for example, costs on average $3,757 per year.
Tuition and fees are subject to annual review by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.
Your cost of attendance figure includes actual tuition charges and fees based on your classification level in medical school (M1-M4) and the number of months in your level’s academic school year (11 or 12).
Only on a case-by-case basis, students may submit an appeal to increase their budget due to special or extenuating circumstances.
In the event a student should withdraw, tuition and fees charged by the School of Medicine will be assessed in accordance with the Tuition Refund Policy.
Note to Entering First-Year Students
Entering students are advised to start the school year with some money to ensure all upfront expenses are paid timely. It is strongly recommended that you pay July rent prior to receiving fall semester financial aid. Also, it helps to have some extra money available for buying books and supplies the first week of fall semester.
Per Federal Regulations, the cost of purchasing a vehicle cannot be included in the cost of attendance. Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine encourages all students to seek a reliable means of transportation prior to entering clerkship rotations.
Please be aware, prior debt payment such as credit cards and consumer loans cannot be included in the financial aid budget.
Students with Dependents and/or Spouse
According to the Federal Construction Rules for Student Cost Of Attendance, only the student’s expenses directly relating to the student’s education are to be included in the expected cost of attendance, regardless of filing status (single, married, or with dependents).
Financial Aid is not intended to support families. Only with proper documentation, child care costs while a spouse works or single parent student is in school may be accommodated up to a maximum of $1000 per month per child.
