Sharon Barrett has been selected to serve as our inaugural Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration at VTCSOM.  In this executive leadership role she will be maturing our finance and administration infrastructure to optimally support our current work, leading the budget planning processes associated with growth in medical school enrollment and our research program, and contributing to our planning process for a new medical school building and upcoming reaccreditation process.  The Assistant Dean for Finance and Administration will report directly to the dean and join the medical school’s executive leadership team.

Sharon was selected through a national search that culminated in 3 highly qualified finalists (the others were from LSU and VMI).  The search committee was led by Dr. Paul Skolnik (Chair, Basic Science Education).  The committee and interviewers included representatives from VTCSOM and the dean’s office, VT administration and financial leadership including the Provost’s office, and Carilion Clinic.

Sharon is a double Hokie (BS and Masters in Accounting).  After working 11 years in industry she spent 12 years at Virginia Tech working in the Controller’s Office and as a Business Manager in the College of Engineering.  In 2017 she moved to Radford University where she served in a variety of roles culminating in her current position as Assistant VP for Planning, Budget & Reporting.

We are confident that creating this position and recruiting an experienced financial administrator as its first incumbent will improve our capabilities to work effectively within VTCSOM and with our academic and clinical partners.  We look forward to greeting Sharon when she joins us on September 25!
