Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine – Hampton University Early Identification Program

Early Identification

Beginning in 2015, two Hampton University students are accepted each year into the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine–Hampton University Early Identification Program, which provides intensive medical school preparation during two summer sessions. Participants who meet certain academic requirements can choose to accept guaranteed admission to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke.

Summer 1 (Rising Juniors) During the first summer, the selected students will participate in a 10-week summer program that gives them the opportunity to engage in hands-on, hypothesis-driven independent research at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute in Roanoke, Virginia. The Summer 1 program blends an emphasis on research with an introduction to clinical skills and MCAT overview and preparation.

Summer 2 (Rising Seniors) During the second summer, the selected students will participate in six weeks of clinical rotations throughout various departments at Carilion Clinic facilities in Roanoke, Virginia. The Summer 2 program will emphasize a range of clinical experiences, intensive MCAT preparation, and advising on the American Medical College Application Service, or AMCAS, application.

Students are expected to take the MCAT by the fall of their senior year of college. In order to receive guaranteed admission to VTCSOM, students selected for early identification must perform well on the MCAT, fulfill all the medical school's prerequisites, and participate in the school's interview process--the Multiple Mini-Interview, also known as the MMI.

Early Identification Program participants are expected to complete their undergraduate studies in four years and to matriculate to medical school immediately following college graduation. While successful participants are guaranteed admission to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, they are under no obligation to attend.
