Brian K. Unwin M.D.
Geriatric Medicine
Chief of Geriatrics & Palliative Medicine for Carilion Clinic
Clinical Professor for VTCSOM
Dr. Unwin is trained in family and geriatric medicine. He received his medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences and completed residency training in Family Medicine at Martin Army Community Hospital Ft. Benning, GA, and a fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Madigan Army Medical Center, Ft. Lewis, WA. His areas of interest are Geriatric Medicine, including normal aging, older athletes, home-based care, dementia, and end of life care.
Dr. Unwin served as the Department of Defense representative to the National Alzheimer's Project Act (NAPA), and as the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) representative to the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and American Psychiatric Association (APA) Dementia Update Measure Development Work Group. He retired from the Army in 2013 after 29 years of service.
Dr. Unwin is currently Section Chief for Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, and senior medical director for Carilion Clinic Home Care and Hospice. He has co-appointments in Internal Medicine and Family and Community Medicine as a Clinical Professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Dr. Unwin believes that geriatrics is the application of both medical and social care to older adults to promote the best possible safe function in the least restrictive environment.
Parking for the Ceremony
Parking is free at Jefferson Center and is located along Luck Avenue across from the main entrance. Although parking is typically readily available, it may become limited based on the event. Handicap parking is available in a dedicated lot on Luck Avenue across from Fitzpatrick Hall.

Faculty may now order regalia from Oak Hall Cap and Gown.
All orders must be placed by March 30, 2024.
Orders will be shipped to the school and will be available for pick-up beginning Monday, April 27 in M149.
