Match Day 2014

  • When March 21 , 2014, 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, M203
2 Riverside Circle, Roanoke, VA 24016

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine will celebrate Match Day on March 21 in a ceremony open to the public. The event will begin privately for students at noon, to be followed at 12:30 p.m. with a public ceremony and welcoming addresses by Dr. Aubrey Knight, associate dean for student affairs, and Dr. Cynda Johnson, dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

As part of the ceremony, Dr. Knight will call the medical students to the front of the auditorium one at a time. Each student will announce his or her residency and place a pushpin into a map of the United States to illustrate the location of the residency. The ceremony will conclude at 2:00 p.m. with closing remarks from the dean. A reception for the students, their families, and the extended Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine community—including friends—will follow in the atrium.

Match Day is part of the National Resident Matching Program, which matches fourth-year medical students with residency programs across the country. The match involves a complex algorithm that matches students’ preferences with the preferences of the residency programs. Match Day occurs at the same time on the same day at all medical schools in the United States. Not until the stroke of noon Eastern Standard Time will students receive a sealed envelope with a letter detailing where they will spend the next several years of their medical careers.

The National Resident Matching Program started in 1952 in an effort to standardize how medical students are matched with residency programs. Students begin the process at the beginning of their final year of medical school by applying for residency programs. After the programs review the applications, selected candidates are invited to interview. When the interviews are complete, both the students and the programs compile ranked lists of their choices, in a process culminating in Match Day.
