April 2023 Exceptional Teachers

We are interested in collecting your stories about faculty members, residents, nurses, or anyone else, who have impacted or influenced you in a significant way. Please tell us about what those teachers did that resulted in an exceptional educational experience and how it changed you.

This Month's Submissions

Below are the exceptional teacher recognitions shared with the Learning Environment Advocacy Committee this rotation. Thank you to these faculty for providing a great experience for our students. 

April 2023 Submissions

Emergency Medicine

  • Dr. Kimberly Abel - “Excellent teacher, sets clear expectations, gives constructive feedback.”
  • Dr. Keel Coleman - “Dr. Coleman was a pleasure to work with. Although the shift I worked with Dr. Coleman was rather slow, he used the opportunity to discuss healthcare system science with me and provide an overview of several learning resources on the topic. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and appreciate his engagement.”

Family and Community Medicine

  • Dr. Taylor Dayton - “Dr. Dayton had me demonstrate physical exam skills and worked to improve me techniques. I really appreciate her feedback, she was positive, constructive, and taught me useful skills! She consistently demonstrated excellent communication skills, active listening, and patient for her patients.”
  • Dr. Mark Watts - “Dr. Watts exemplifies what a physician should be - caring, involved, enthusiastic and devoted to life-long learning.”

Internal Medicine

  • Dr. J. Kyle Drury - “Delightful! Made sure that I was included in patient care whenever possible and was a fantastic teacher.”
  • Dr. Vishal Patel - “He was an excellent attending on wards; very engaging, excellent teacher, and is interested in students' learning.”

Neurology

  • Dr. Geetika Bajpai - “Dr. Bajpai is always kind and caring toward patients and their families. She is always respectful towards them and is very understanding. She is a fantastic resident physician that I look up towards.”
  • Dr. Eliud Irizarry - “Great attending, enjoyed being around and very knowledgeable.”

OB-GYN

  • Dr. Shannon Howard - “She is such an amazing doctor before anything else. She puts patients at ease and clearly explains what is going on/what options they have. She listens to patients so well, and made sure that I was actively involved in patient care. She gave me meaningful feedback throughout the rotation and I think that helped me do better from the day to day. She also works so well with everyone.”
  • Dr. Lauren Nelson - “Very clearly passionate about what she does and I think that brings an amazing energy in to the room. She clearly cares about patients and medical student education.”

Pediatrics

Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine

  • Dr. Rebekah Grimes - “Dr. Grimes is an phenomenal resident, she looks out for medical students, has a strong ability to connect with patients, looks for opportunities to teach, and is exceptionally kind.”
  • Dr. Jennifer Wells - “Dr. Wells is a one-of-a-kind attending. Her ability to connect with patients is astounding. She has an innate ability to know what to say and how to say it, and is dynamic in her word choice and tone for each patient. She also cares deeply for medical students. She looks out for our well being, treats us with extreme kindness and respect, and fosters a very comfortable environment. She looks for opportunities to teach and share knowledge, showcases vulnerability, and is a pleasure to work with. Thanks for a great rotation Dr. Wells!”

Radiology

  • Dr. Rick Riego De Dios - “I appreciated how we went through the images together, i never felt belittled or attack despite getting the answers wrong over and over. He was very patient with us.”
  • Dr. Ashley Tuttle - “Dr. Tuttle was such an inspiration. She was so wonderful with the patients i really aspire to take those qualities into my field of choice.”

Surgery

  • Dr. Elaina Graham - “Dr. Graham taught me so much while I was on my breast surgery elective. She was also so kind.”
  • Dr. Jacqueline Steffen - “Jaq was exceptionally kind and went out of her way to teach me during my surgery rotation.”
