October 2023 Exceptional Teachers

This Month's Submissions

Below are the exceptional teacher recognitions shared with the Learning Environment Advocacy Committee this rotation. Thank you to these faculty for providing a great experience for our students.

Family and Community Medicine

Internal Medicine

  • Dr Jeri Lantz - “I really appreciated that Dr. Lantz came with real ABG examples and worked us through each problem with active participation!”
  • Dr Clinton Timmerman - “Clint went above and beyond to help medical students learn while they were on IM. He would frequently use downtime to thoroughly walk students through teaching points that came up on rounds, explain interesting EKG findings and expand on their causes/implications/treatments, and answer student questions regarding medical ethics in our patients' care, how/why decisions were made during codes/rapids, etc. He also made a significant effort to push the team to critically think about our patients' care and how we could optimize it. He was very supportive and encouraged medical students in get involved the decision making process. He gave us adequate space and time to work through problems and practice our presentations on rounds. It was evident that he has a large fund of knowledge and an exemplary ability to critically solve problems. He not only used his own skills in an impactful way, but he also helped others on the team learn from them.”

Neurology

  • Dr Carlos Mora - “Dr. Mora valued the medical students on his team. He made an effort to show us unique findings in our patient and important questions we would not otherwise consider in the management of our patients. He also encouraged us to share the knowledge we had learn through other avenues so he could also learn from us. I really valued his effort to get know us as individuals.”
  • Dr Fawwad Hussain - “Very great teacher! Constantly integrating students into medical practice and encouraging us to learn. I really appreciated how Dr. Fawwad was a kind, guiding leader for the residents and the students.”

OB-GYN

  • Dr Jessica Sosa-Stanley - “educational lecture. encouraged questions! really enjoyed it”
  • Dr Maria Pena Hoffman - “She was enthusiastic while working with me as a medical student. When we had downtime, she thought of important and appropriate questions to ask to further my education regarding the conditions we were seeing that day. Dr. Pena Hofmann was a resident I would be happy to work with again.”

Pediatrics

  • Dr Don Kees - “Dr. Kees gave valuable and timely feedback that was both uplifting and constructive. I really appreciated him spending time to meet with me one on one to go over what I was doing well and areas that I could try to improve in. I felt like a valued member of the team and he made me excited for a potential future in Pediatrics!”
  • Dr Elizabeth Palomo Caturla - “Dr. Palomo did an excellent job of teaching both throughout pre rounds and rounds. She also demonstrated excellent communication skills with families and empathized and provided parents a space to talk.”

Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine

  • Dr Amin Syed - Dr. Syed was awesome! He went out of his way to provide me with resources to support my learning and genuinely cared about me doing well”

Radiology

  • Dr Khursheed Imam - “Excellent talk on MRI physics and review of concepts.”
  • Dr David Johnsen - “excellent teacher, great at explaining concepts”

Surgery

  • Dr Daniel Lollar - “A great lecturer. Was very engaged with the students in the OR. Took the time to teach me very useful/important skills, such as cutting sutures properly and holding the needle driver. Always has a positive attitude, even during long surgeries on night shifts.”
  • Dr Hannah Roberson - “Although we were on a busy service together, she went out of her way to teach me important skills, such as wound cleaning. She helped me a lot with notes and even sat down with me to go over one of mine. A pleasure to work with!”
