Curriculum Vitae
The CV at VTC
Your Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a critical document that tells the story of your academic, clinical, and professional development in medicine. Whether you're preparing for residency applications, applying for research positions, or seeking scholarships and leadership opportunities, your CV needs to be polished, professional, and personalized to your goals.
Our Career Success Coordinator works directly with VTCSOM students to guide the development and refinement of their CVs. In your one-on-one session, the Career Success Coordinator will:
- Provide the preferred VTC CV template tailored to your medical specialty or interest
- Offer detailed feedback on structure, formatting, and content
- Help you effectively highlight your clinical, research, and extracurricular experiences
- Share best practices for keeping your CV organized and residency-ready
- Appointments are available year-round. To schedule an appointment, email Sophia Minor (sophiam@vt.edu) with the subject line "CV Advising."
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What’s the difference between a CV and a resume for medical students?
- A: A CV is a comprehensive record of your academic, clinical, and research experiences, often used for residency and educational applications. A resume is typically shorter and tailored for specific job opportunities.
Q: When should I start building my CV?
- A: Start your first year! Update it regularly so you’re prepared for every opportunity — including summer research, conferences, or scholarships.
Q: Do I need different CVs for different specialties?
- A: The core content will remain the same, but formatting and emphasis may shift depending on the specialty. Sophia can guide you on tailoring your CV to your career path.
Q: Will Sophia review my CV more than once?
- A: Yes! Students are encouraged to schedule follow-up sessions as they gain new experiences or prepare to apply for specific opportunities.
