Medical Student Research Symposium 2020

[Varun Kavuru, class of 2021]: I would definitely say having Dr. Dev as my research mentor has been a huge blessing.

[Manavi Bhagwat, class of 2021]: She actually has a true love for medicine and research.

[Hiba Zifar, class of 2022]: I feel so fortunate to like have had the opportunity to work with her.

[Manavi]: She started out asking what particular areas I had a personal interest in and she helped me develop my project out of that.

[Hiba]: She really gives me that creative space to design my own project and come up with my own research question and I feel like in the research world it's so important for me to have that experience to grow by myself but at the same time I know that I have her as a resource.

[Dr. Devasmita Dev, 2020 research mentor of the year]: The best way to help them learn is really to have to put their hands in and participate. To also be able to generate their own ideas and to make it their own because I think when you're passionate about learning about something you want to feel that you're a part and parcel and moving that field forward in some ways.

[Varun]: She's always got like high spirits which is very encouraging when you're dealing with a difficult research project that sometimes you can get kind of down in the dumps about if things aren't moving quickly enough or there's so much paperwork in the way, and so she's always kind of very supportive in that regard.

[Maniva]: I think that in this profession from what I've seen it's really easy for people to kind of get caught up in day-to-day activities and not focus on why they're doing what they're doing, but she loves her patients, she loves her projects and she puts her passion into everything.

[Varun]: I think it has a huge impact on how your research goes is how involved your research mentor is and how responsive they are. She's always been fantastic in that regard. I consider myself very lucky and fortunate to have this type of mentor and relationship in my career.

[Hiba]: You can just tell that she's so passionate about her work and her research and I really hope that I'm able to emulate some of these qualities that I've just seen in her.

[Dr. Dev]: I feel that part of me is so excited about what I do and I feel if somebody is as excited or becomes that excited, I think we're in harmony and we can all produce together. So it's so great that they feel a passion that I do. I can't tell you how amazing it is to be thought of and to be considered for this award. It makes me feel so good inside.
