1.0 Introduction
Students can learn more about Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) facilities by visiting the Campus Tour section of the medical school website.
2.0 Dining
There are a variety of dining options on the Health Science & Technology Campus.
- The VTCSOM Café offers beverages, pre-made meals, and snacks through self-checkout vending. Students are encouraged to download the Connect and Pay app to their smartphones to scan and pay for purchases. Credit and debit cards are also accepted at the self-checkout counter.
- A cafeteria is located at Carilion Clinic’s facilities at 3 Riverside. The Wellness Weekly contains a link to the menu each week.
3.0 Library
VTCSOM students have access to Virginia Tech Libraries, including 24/7 remote and physical access to the VTCSOM Library in Riverside 2. Students may also utilize the FBRI Library in Riverside 4 and the Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Health Sciences Library.
4.0 Proxy Cards
All students are issued sub‐master keycards (proxy cards) at registration that allow access to certain areas in the School of Medicine. Students who encounter problems with keycards and cannot access student areas should contact the Student Affairs Manager. During non‐working hours, students should contact Campus Security. There is a fee for any replacement card. Proxy cards should not be shared.
5.0 Lockers
All Phase 1 students will also be provided with a locker located on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the medical school. Students are responsible for placing their own lock on their assigned locker. At the conclusion of Phase 1, students must remove all items and locks from their assigned locker. If this is not completed prior to Phase 2, locks will be removed by facilities, and items will be donated or discarded.
6.0 Bicycles
Bike racks are located under VTCSOM in the parking garage. Students are responsible for securing their bikes (locks, bolts, etc.)
7.0 Student Center
Located in 2 Riverside on the 2nd floor, the Student Center is provided to enhance the quality of student life while on campus. The students are expected to adhere to the posted guidelines on the use of the VTCSOM Student Center and hold each other accountable for the upkeep of this space (cleaning of the refrigerator and dishes). The Student Center also houses an all-gender bathroom. If any of the resources in the Student Center are broken or missing (e.g., guitar, ping pong, foosball, piano), contact the Office of Student Affairs.
8.0 Gym & Locker Rooms
A small workout facility is available in 2 Riverside on the 2nd floor. Students and employees have 24/7 access using their key card. The space offers free weights, bikes, ellipticals, two Pelotons, a rowing machine, a ski erg, treadmills, yoga mats, and a resistance band station. Equipment, including weights, should not be removed from the gym. If equipment is broken or missing from the gym, contact the Office of Student Affairs. Shower facilities and short-term-use lockers are available. Students and employees can reserve time in the gym through the online reservation system. Patrons of the gym are expected to clean and return equipment to their designated location after use. All students also receive a membership to the Carilion Wellness Fitness Centers.
9.0 Wellness Room
This space is located in 2 Riverside on the 2nd floor. This space hosts a massage chair and nap pod. The space can be reserved through the online reservation site as a private space for lactation needs, medication self-administration, private worship, and/or rest. Access to this space is open to employees and students.
10.0 VTCSOM Student Kitchen & Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital Lounge
Two refrigerators are available for students in the student kitchen on the second floor of Riverside 2. Students are expected to maintain the cleanliness of this area.
In addition, there is a refrigerator in the student lounge in the Medical Education Building adjacent to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which students are also expected to maintain and keep clean.
11.0 Center for Inclusion
Located on the second floor of 1 Riverside, the Center for Inclusion is a partnership between the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The Center is a place to have meetings or gatherings, host discussions, utilize resources, or to simply find quiet in between classes and research.
12.0 Student Mailroom
Each student is assigned a personalized mailbox for a seamless collection of mail and correspondence. The students are expected to check their mail frequently. The student mailroom is located outside the Student Center on the second floor in 2 Riverside.
