Position Responsibilities

The senior dean for faculty affairs is responsible for issues of faculty governance and the administration of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s appointment, promotion, and tenure processes. Additional duties include oversight of Elements, and annual academic evaluations of faculty. The senior dean for faculty affairs also oversees programs for faculty development and educational research.

Professional Background

Dr. Musick earned his bachelor’s degree from Milligan College, his master’s degree in sociology from East Tennessee University, and his Ph.D. in educational evaluation and policy studies from the University of Kentucky. He held part-time teaching appointments at three universities prior to specializing in medical education beginning in 1992.

Dr. Musick joined the faculty and administration at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in July 2013. Prior to that, he worked in medical education at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and East Carolina University/Brody School of Medicine. He has also had previous faculty and administrative roles in physical medicine and rehabilitation, medical humanities and interdisciplinary studies.

Other Activities

Dr. Musick has served in various capacities as a member of eight professional organizations, currently reviews scholarly submissions for a number of education-related journals, and has been awarded eight different grants pertaining to curriculum development in medical education. He has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and has received national awards for both teaching and research.
