Dr. Sweet joined the Internal Medicine faculty at Carilion Clinic in 2000 after having rotated here on 3 clerkships as a medical student 9 years earlier. He has served as a previous assistant clerkship director, residency program director, and interim stints as chief of hospital medicine and chair of the department of medicine.

He has served on numerous Carilion Clinic and VTCSOM committees and currently serves as chair of the Medical Curriculum Committee. He is an experienced clinician and educator who has received numerous teaching awards, the Laureate Award from the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians, and is a member of PBK, AOA, and the GHHS.

Dr. Sweet met his wife, Mary Beth Sweet, MD, during the first week of medical school. She serves as the Program Director of the Carilion Clinic - Virginia Tech Carilion Family Medicine Residency. They delight in their three grown children and their colleagues at Carilion Clinic and VTCSOM.
