Anthony Baffoe-Bonnie, M.D., Chief of Infectious Diseases, was elected as a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and VTCSOM resident Hyun Sue Kim presented a poster on her IDSA GERM foundation grant-funded project at IDWeek.

Kathryn Bass, M.D., Chief of Pediatric Surgery, was selected to participate in the American College of Surgeons/MacLean Surgical Ethics Fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Bass also has a new publication in the journal Prehospital Emergency Care entitled, “Safe Ground Transport of Pediatric Patients: A Qualitative Assessment of Best Practice Guidelines Implementation."

Christopher Bayne, M.D., in the Department of Surgery, Urology, and the robotic team at CRMH OR recently completed the first abdominopelvic da Vinci Single Port (SP) robotic case at Carilion and the first pediatric SP robotic case in Virginia. They are the fourth team in the country to perform a pediatric SP case (including Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and the University of Florida).

Bernard Boateng, D.O., and Joshua D. Adams, M.D., Department of Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Aortic Center, presented, “Physician-Modified Endovascular Graft (PMEG) Branched-Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (B-EVAR) for Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysm (TAAA) in the Setting of Prior Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR) and EVAR with Aorto-Uni-Iliac (AUI)/Femoral-Femoral Bypass” at the Virginia Vascular Surgery Society Annual Meeting.

Cesar Bravo, M.D., Orthopaedic Surgery, published “What Factors Influence Variability in Thumb Carpometacarpal Arthroplasty Care: A Survey of ASSH Members” in the Journal of HAND and “The Clinical Outcomes of Radiocapitellar Reconstruction with Radiocapitellar Arthroplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty. He presented “Nerve and Tendon Transfers to Restore Upper Limb Function” at the 79th Annual Meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand in Toronto. Dr. Bravo also published the following studies: Design, Control, and Experimental Evaluation of a Novel Robotic Glove System for Patients with Brachial Plexus Injuries, Voice-Controlled Human-Machine Interface for an Assistive Exoskeleton Glove Aiding Patients with Brachial Plexus Injuries, and Primary Total Elbow Arthroplasty, Is There a Correlation Between Smoking and Postoperative Complications? A Retrospective Review of the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database.

Carl Buchholz, M.D., (PG-5 Resident), Bryan R. Collier, D.O., Madeline D’Aquila, Rebecca S. Gates, M.D., (PG-3 Resident), and Jacob R. Gillen, M.D., presented, “Optimizing Enoxaparin Dosing in Trauma Patients: A Comparison of Fixed-Dose and Weight-Based Strategies” at the 2023 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

Charles M. Bullins II, D.N.P., Cardiothoracic Surgery Nursing Advanced Practice Consultant, Department of Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, received a Virginia Nurses Foundation 40 under 40 Award. The award recognizes and honors 40 outstanding emerging nursing leaders, all under 40, who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in their professional practice, leadership roles, and significant contributions to the nursing field beyond the practice setting.

John Burton, M.D., and Anne Ickes, D.O., Emergency Medicine, presented at the Virginia ED Bridge Expansion Conference in September.  They shared their expertise on “Lessons Learned Nationally and In Roanoke.”  Dr. Ickes also sat on a panel discussion on “Special Populations.”

Jinman Cai, M.D., (PG-4 Resident), James Kwok, Catherine Buck, Katie L. Bower, M.D., Joshua Stodghill, D.O., Bryan R. Collier, D.O., and Jacob R. Gillen, M.D., presented “Small Bite Fascial Closure Technique Reduces Fascial Dehiscence in Patients with Laparotomy Incision” at the 2023 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

Charles E. “Bud” Conklin Jr., D.D.S. in Dentistry, Department of Surgery, received the Teaching Excellence Academy for Collaborative Healthcare (TEACH) Innovative Teaching Award which recognizes the use of new teaching strategies or the implementation of existing strategies in new ways to enhance learning. Innovative teaching encompasses teaching students from diverse learning backgrounds, a passion and enthusiasm for meaningful teaching, application of teaching technologies, and creativity in engaging students.

Charles Daniel, M.D., Department of Surgery, Urology, recently completed his 1000th da Vinci robotic procedure.   

Gregory Dehmer, M.D., Cardiology, was the chair of the writing committee for the 2023 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Clinical Performance and Quality Measures for Coronary Artery Revascularization.

Zachary den Besten, M.D., (PG-3 Resident) Department of Surgery, won Second Place in the 2023 Virginia Chapter, American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma Physician-in-Training Paper Competition with his paper, “Whole Blood Resuscitation at a Rural Level 1 Trauma Center.” 

Madaliene Denison, D.O., (PG-5 Resident), Jinman Cai, M.D. (PG-4 Resident), and Farrell Adkins, M.D. presented “Trainee Awareness of USPSTF Colorectal Cancer Screening Guidelines” at the 2023 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

Kellan Etter, D.O., and Lisa Uherick, M.D., Emergency Medicine, have an abstract accepted for presentation at ACEP where they share a case, Vital Signs for a Reason: Revisiting Refractory Tachycardia in the Diagnosis on ALL. 

Dylan Flood, M.D., (PG-3 Resident) and Joshua D. Adams, M.D., Department of Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Aortic Center, presented “Fenestrated-EVAR in the Setting of Unilateral Iliac Occlusion” at the Virginia Vascular Surgery Society Annual Meeting.

Sara Guasch, M.D., Charles Schleupner, M.D., and Christi Stewart, M.D.,Palliative Medicine, served as reviewers of pre-proposals and full proposals for the AAMC’s Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) national grant program in 2023.
 Kiran Khalid, M.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, has been awarded the RAP23 Tier II grant for her proposal titled “Survey Investigating Psychiatrist Education on Neuroscience of Resilience.” The grant awards up to $2500 towards the project. This project will focus on surveying training programs about educational experiences and thoughts around the neuroscience of resilience.
 Kiran Khalid, M.D., and Badr Ratnakaran, M.D., symposium proposal "Grandparenting and the Golden Years: Understanding the factors and mental health outcomes of grandparent caregivers in older adults" was accepted for the 2024 Annual Meeting of American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry to be held at Atlanta, Georgia, in March 2024.
 Ahmad Khan, M.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, has been made the co-director of the APPNA Geriatric Online Certification, alongside Dr. Asif Khan, program director of Adult Psychiatry at Central Michigan University. He has also been elected as Treasurer for Pakistani American Psychiatric Association of North America (PAPANA). He was a contributor to the poster “Cannabidiol and Anxiety – Current Treatment and Future Directions” which was presented at World Psychiatric Association in Vienna.

Jeri Lantz, M.D., Chief of General Internal Medicine, received the Vivian W. Pinn Leadership in the Health of Women Award from the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians in September.

Stephanie Lareau, M.D., Emergency Medicine, and Eric Olsen, P.A.,published “Interdisciplinary Wilderness Medicine Education” in Physician Assistant Clinics.

Maxine Lee, M.D., Anesthesiology, was boarded by The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians and is certified in Health Care Quality Management as a Physician Advisor and in Patient Safety and Risk Management.

Jon Maher, M.D., Orthopaedic Surgery, provided community education at the Blacksburg Sports Club.

Erin McDaid, Ching-Fang Sun, Yezhe Lin, Raymond P. Uymatiao, Shyam H. Bhatt, Maria Stack Hankey, Lauren E. Lipphard, Anita S. Kablinger, M.D., had their abstract accepted by the Psychiatric Society of Virginia and will be presented as a poster: “The Weight of the Wait: Lack of Outpatient Psychiatric Care Availability in Virginia.”

Erin McDaid, John Eric Vance, M.D., and Binx Yezhe Lin had the following poster included in the 2023 APA Mental Health Service Conference in Washington D.C.: “Could Hormones Save Lives? A Case of Gender-Affirming Hormonal Therapy in Treatment-Resistant Depression in a Transgender Patient.”

Erin McDaid, Binx Yezhe Lin, Hui Xie, Ching-Fang Sun, Akhil S. Pola, Anita S. Kablinger, M.D., and Katherine V. Liebesny, M.D., had their poster, entitled “The Prevalence of Eating Disorders in Children, Adolescents, and Young Adults, 2017-2022," accepted by APA 2024 annual meeting.

Joseph Moskal, M.D., Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery, published “Cemented Femoral Stem Fixation: Back to the Future” in The Journal of Arthroplasty. He also presented at the 2023 Eastern Orthopaedic Association’s 54th Annual Meeting in Charleston, S.C., and the 2023 Members’ Meeting of The Hip Society in Durham, N.C. Additionally, Dr. Moskal delivered three presentations at the Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education in Houston, Texas and was faculty and moderator at the Orthopaedic Summit of Evolving Technologies in Boston, Massachusetts.

Sankar Muthukumar and James Drougas, M.D., Department of Surgery, Vascular Surgery, presented “Post-Traumatic Jugular Venous Pseudoaneurysms: A Case Report” at the Virginia Vascular Surgery Society Annual Meeting.

Jason Naldo, D.P.M., Orthopaedic Surgery, taught three surgical skills courses for the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons in Rosemont, Illinois.

Varsha Nandwana, Ching Fang-Sun, Geetika Bajpai, Anita Kablinger, M.D., and Aashit Shah, M.D., had the poster abstract, entitled "Association Between Postictal Psychosis and Subsequent Diagnosis of Primary Psychotic Disorders: A Retrospective Cohort Study,” accepted at the American Epilepsy Society 2023 Annual Meeting.

Jaclyn Nunziato, M.D., Obstetrics and Gynecology, received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award, a student-nominated honor that recognizes a faculty physician who exemplifies qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in the teaching and advising of medical students, from the AAMC and the Gold Foundation.

Daniel Pauly, M.D., Ph.D., Cardiology, Richard McLane, M.D., and Angela Stultz, R.N., presented their abstract “Using dielectric sensing in making discharge decision for patients with heart failure” at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in November.

Ash Raju, M.D., in the Department of Surgery, Western Region, Vascular Surgery, presented “Starting a TCAR Program in a Rural Health Setting” at the Virginia Vascular Surgery Society Annual Meeting.

Badr Ratnakara, M.D, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, was interviewed by the Journal of Ethics – Why Should We Care About the Mental Health of Older Adults. You can listen to the interview here. He also represented the state of Virginia for the APA Federal Advocacy efforts at the U.S. Congress.

Ehsan Samarbafzadeh, M.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, will be representing Carilion Clinic in joining the Bipolar Disorder Learning Health Network (BDLHN).

Ben Scarboro, M.D., (PG-4 resident), Department of Surgery, won First Place in the 2023 Virginia Chapter, American College of Surgeons, Committee on Trauma Physician-in-Training Paper Competition with his paper, “Using Human Factors Engineering to Enhance New Trauma Bay Effectiveness."

Umar Sofi, M.D., Pulmonary and Critical Care, received a $50,000 National Science Foundation grant for his project “Flow regulated nasal oxygen deliver device.”

Marcus Speaker, M.D., Family and Community Medicine, represented Carilion in the CDC’s “Reduction in Burden” study.

Samantha Speroni, Rebecca S. Gates, M.D., (PG-3 Resident), Michael S. Nussbaum, M.D., Bryan R. Collier, D.O., and Jacob R. Gillen, M.D., presented, “Impact of Weight-Based Enoxaparin Dosing Titrated by Anti-Xa Levels on Venous Thromboembolism and Transfusions in Elective Colorectal Surgery Patients” at the 2023 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons.

Luke Swatzyna, P.A., Family and Community Medicine, won the Virginia Academy of Physicians Assistants’ P.A. of the Year for 2023.

Alexandra Toloczko and Joshua D. Adams, M.D., Department of Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Aortic Center, presented “Covered Endovascular Reconstruction of the Iliac Bifurcation (CERIB) Techniques for Internal Iliac Preservation and Short-Term Outcomes in Patients with Aortoiliac Occlusive Disease” at the Virginia Vascular Surgery Society Annual Meeting.

Robert Trestman, Ph.D., M.D., Chair of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, was elected Councilor to the American Association of Chairs of Departments of Psychiatry.

Darien Wang, M.D., Internal Medicine, received the Inpatient Internal Medicine Teaching Award from the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians in September.

Modupe (Seyi) White, D.N.P., Department of Surgery, Breast Surgery, presented a talk on “primary prevention for breast cancer” on Oct. 19 for Carilion employees. 

The CNRV Breast Program had a poster presentation conducted by Tara Newberry, D.P.T., oncologist Heather Brooks, M.D., and surgeon Charles Bissell, M.D., at the American Society of Clinical Oncology Quality Care Symposium in Boston entitled “Effectiveness of a dedicated therapist in improving prospective identification and pre-operative rehabilitation to reduce post-operative treatment encounters for best cancer- related lymphedema in a rural and underserved population.”
