Anthony Baffoe-Bonnie, M.D., medical director for infection control, was featured in an episode of VHHA’s Patients Come First podcast. In the podcast he discussed his experiences coming from Ghana to America, his work during COVID-19, and more.

Lindsey Caley, M.D., pediatric emergency medicine, has been appointed by Gov. Ralph Northam to the Task Force on Services for Survivors of Sexual Assault.

Carilion Structural Cardiologist Jason Foerst, M.D., is the first provider in the country to enroll a patient in a groundbreaking heart failure clinical trial, "The CORCINCH-HF" study. The research allows Carilion to offer alternative options for patients with complex heart failure conditions. 

Mark Greenawald, M.D., vice chair of Academic Affairs and Professional Development for Family and Community Medicine, presented two webinars on gratitude for the American Medical Association’s Emerging Topics in Professional Satisfaction and Practice Sustainability series. The two webinars were: “The Habit of Gratitude: Being Positively Contagious” and “The Habit of Gratitude: Being Positively Contagious—Evening Session.” He also presented a webinar on “Seeking Feedback Like You Mean It” for the AMA’s Steps Forward webinar 

Carilion Innovation and the Department of Surgery, led by Chair of Surgery Michael Nussbaum, M.D., announced a partnership with MetiStream Incorporated to create an Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled solution – the Surgical Clinical Reviewer (SCR) – that will extract meaningful insights from unstructured surgical quality data in electronic health records.

Jaclyn Nunziato, M.D., obstetrics- gynecology, was named to The Roanoker’s “40 Under 40” list. The magazine cited her work to educate about women’s health and her creation of Huddle Up Moms, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering women.

Beth Polk, M.D., Family & Community Medicine, served as core faculty and the conference yoga instructor for the 3rd Annual American Academy of Family Physicians Physician Health and Well-being Conference. In addition to leading the conference attendees in a virtual yoga session each day, she presented workshops on “Yoga in Minutes” and “Lifestyle Medicine.”

James Schmidley, M.D., Neurology, received the AB Baker Teacher Recognition Award from the American Academy of Neurology. This is a national honor recognizing the outstanding dedication and commitment to teaching and helping train the next generation of doctors. 

Yemisi Solomon, M.D., Family & Community Medicine, was the recipient of the 2020-2021 Virginia Academy of Family Physician Foundation's "Choose Virginia" scholarship award.

Marcus Speaker, M.D., associate chief medical information officer, joined the Becker's Healthcare Podcast to talk about the next evolution of virtual care and enterprise imaging.

Robert Trestman, Ph.D., M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, was named chair of the American Hospital Association’s Behavioral Health Services Council in 2021. He was asked to participate in an upcoming Leadership Rounds discussion in May with AHA's Board Chair Dr. Rod Hochman. He also was interviewed by the AHA about trustees’ role in advancing community health.

In addition, Dr. Trestman was featured in a new series of leadership profiles from the Council of State Governments Justice Center and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation. The profile focused on his work with START NOW, a program he co-developed in 2007 which uses group psychotherapy methods to help people in the justice system manage their mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

Janet Young, M.D., emergency medicine, has completed nearly five years of service as chair of the Carilion Centralized Credentialing Committee. Congratulations to Randy Clements, D.P.M., chief of podiatry, who has taken on this role as the new chair.

Internal Medicine residents Jarek Marva, D.O., Kat Mustafa, D.O., and Ian Richardson, D.O., won the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Physicians’ medical jeopardy competition this year. They will now represent the state of Virginia at the National ACP competition.
