The following faculty members were honored recently in Carilion Clinic's Cheers for Peers newsletter.

Cesar Bravo, M.D., Director of the Hand Surgery Fellowship Program, and Ben Coobs, M.D., Director of the Adult Reconstruction Surgery Fellowship Program, were each awarded a 2021-2022 OMeGA grant. OMeGA received 211 applications from orthopaedic fellowship programs across the U.S. and awarded grants to the most meritorious programs.

Cesar Bravo, M.D., and Ted Shuler, M.D., Section Chief of Trauma, were appointed members of Carilion Clinic Continuing Medical Education Committee, effective Sept. 7. Shuler was also appointed Physician Champion for the committee for orthopaedic surgery.

Jon Carmouche, M.D., Section Chief of Spine and Pediatrics, was appointed as Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Ben Coobs, M.D., was appointed as Program Director for the Adult Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program. John Martino, M.D., Orthopaedics, was appointed as Associate Program Director for the Adult Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship Program.

John Epling, M.D., Vice Chair of Research and Population Health for Family and Community Medicine, Michelle Rockwell, Ph.D. and Colette Carver, D.N.P., were part of a published article “Socializing the evidence for diabetes control to develop “mindlines”: a qualitative pilot study.”

Mark Greenawald, M.D., Vice Chair of Academic Affairs, Wellbeing and Professional Development for Family and Community Medicine, was named the Pyramid Resource Group’s 2021 Prism Award winner for his commitment to advancing coaching for leaders in health care.

Ryan Harris, D.O., Orthopaedics, serves as the State Air Surgeon in Pennsylvania with the US Air Force and was asked to speak at a recent conference regarding different applications of the Air Forces Global Health Engagement and how it may be used to help other states with their State Partners in different regions and countries.

Cheri Hartman, Ph.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, will receive the Vision and Values award from Friendship Living in November for her work with Carilon’s Back on Track youth addiction program, Office-Based Opioid Treatment (OBOT) program, and years of community service for youth, including Kiwanis playground fundraising.

Joe Moskal, M.D., Chair of Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, served as moderator and faculty instructor and presented instructional course lectures at the 88th annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, to include: “Acetabular Revision from the Direct Anterior Approach,” “Cemented Stems: How to get it right – Surgical Technique,” “Cemented Femoral Stem Fixation,” “Femoral Exposure Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty,” “Case Based Presentations Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty,” and “Hip Session, THAs” of The Hip Society/American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons. He also presented at the 2021 members' meeting of The Knee Society.

Mike O’Malley, M.D., Sports Medicine and a member of the Maine Orthopaedic Review, provided preparation instruction for candidates sitting for their American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons oral examinations.

Jessica Partin, M.D., General Surgery, was invited to speak in a panel presentation at the Cancer Action Coalition of Virginia virtual conference in September. Her presentation titled, “Case study on Commission on Cancer QI Project” reviewed the Plan/Do/Study/Act Quality Improvement study offered jointly by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer with the American Cancer Society.

Randy Rhea, M.D., Family and Community Medicine, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Bradly Free Clinic in September at a special ceremony.

Robert Trestman, Ph.D., M.D., Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, presented a virtual lecture to Mid Public Sweden University Psychology students on personality disorders, was an invited speaker for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement/American Foundation for Suicide Prevention/Providence Health System Suicide Prevention Expert Meeting in August and participated in the AACDP Town Hall on post-pandemic telepsychiatry. He also served as APA representation on the White House COVID-19 Health Equity Task Force SME Presentation: Patient Advocacy Panel.

Dave Trinkle, M.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Health, and NL Bishop, D.Min., were featured as guest speakers at Brain Injury Services of SWVA's Brain Injury Awareness and Veteran Appreciation Night in August.

Phyllis Whitehead, Ph.D. C.N.S., Palliative Medicine, has been selected as one of 225 distinguished nurse leaders by the American Academy of Nursing with the distinction of “Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.”
