Christopher Allen, P.A., Interventional Radiology, was honored by the Virginia Academy of Physician Assistants as the Preceptor of the Year.
Peter Apel, M.D., Ph.D., Hand and Upper Extremity, and Randy Clements, D.P.M., Co-Chief of Foot and Ankle, co-published the book chapter “Free Flaps for Lower Extremity Trauma” in McGlamry’s Foot and Ankle Surgery textbook. Dr. Clements published an additional two chapters, “Lisfranc Fracture/Dislocation” and “The Management of Pilon Fractures: Operative Principles & Approaches.”
Shannon Armbruster, M.D., Gynecological Oncology, will be the chair of the Patient Education Committee for the Foundation for Women’s Cancer in 2022-2024.
Adegbenga Bankole, M.D., Chief of Rheumatology, published two articles in December with his fellows and residents (Drs. Taskeen Kazmi, Emma Greear, and Alyssa Strazanac) in Cureus: "Determination of the Risk Factors Contributing to the Development of Neuropsychiatric Lupus in a Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Cohort" and "The Best of Times and Yet the Worst of Times.” Drs. Bankole, Kazmi, and Strazanac also published their abstract "The Risk Factors For Neuropsychiatric Lupus In A Single Center Cohort" in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology.
Dr. Bankole and Jane Nwaonu, M.D., Rheumatology, also published "The Shifting Landscape of Lupus Nephritis Management: A Review" in Cureus.
Briana Beach, D.O., Mark Greenawald, M.D., and Jonathan Stewart, M.D., all Family and Community Medicine, presented at the Virginia Academy of Family Physicians winter meeting in January.

Anna Buhle, Douglas Grider, M.D., Dominion Pathology Associates, Mariana Phillips, M.D., Chief of Dermatology, and Michael Wiid, M.D., Internal Medicine, co-published "Kaposi sarcoma: What to do with a negative human herpesvirus 8 immunohistochemical stain?" in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology in December.
Maithili Chitnavis, M.D., Varun Kesar, M.D, Youseung Kim, D.O., and Douglas Grider, M.D., co-published "An Alarming Mimicry of Intra-Abdominal Infections: Acute Appendiceal Diverticulitis" in Case Reports in Gastrointestinal Medicine in November.
Benjamin Coobs, M.D., Join Replacement, presented “Dislocation Rates Following Total Hip Arthroplasty via the Direct Anterior Approach Regardless of Spinopelvic Deformity” for International Congress in Joint Replacement at the 10th Annual Direct Anterior Approach Hip Course at Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education.
Jeff Croteau, M.D. and Carl Henderson, D.O., both Rheumatology, are the outgoing and incoming Presidents, respectively, of the Virginia Society of Rheumatology.
Joshua Cuoco, D.O., John Entwistle, D.O., Evin Guilliams, D.O., Eric Marvin, D.O. and Biraj Patel, M.D., also published “Initial intracranial pressure is an independent predictor of unfavorable functional outcomes after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage” in the Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, Volume 94, in October.
Paul Dallas, M.D., Internal Medicine, published "Diagnosis at 10 Paces for Bitemporal Wasting," in ACP Internist in January.
Gregory Dehmer, M.D., Cardiology, published "Hospital Characteristics and Early Enrolment Trends in the American College of Cardiology Voluntary Public Reporting Program" in JAMA Network Open. Dehmer and colleagues also presented "Appropriateness of Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement for Severe Aortic Stenosis is Increasing" at the 58th Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons in Miami, Florida in January and "Socioeconomic distress predicts more percutaneous coronary intervention vs. coronary artery bypass grafting and higher mortality " at the same meeting.
Joshua Eikenberg, M.D., Dermatology, was appointed by the Virginia Dermatology Society as the Liaison to the Medical Society of Virginia. He also co-presented J.D. “Diffuse Bruising: An overlooked presentation of primary systemic amyloidosis" at the Virginia Dermatology Society 2021 Annual Meeting in November.
Dr. Eikenberg, Hailey Gosnell, M.D., Douglas Grider, M.D., Dominion Pathology Associates, co-published "Persistent Hypopigmented and Scaly Rash: Challenge" in the American Journal of Dermatopathology in December.
John Epling, M.D., Vice Chair of Research and Population Health for Family and Community Medicine, and Michelle Rockwell, Ph.D., were recognized with the 2021 Pearl award at the North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) for their research project “Does De-Implementation of Low Value Care Impact the Patient-Clinician Relationship?”
Cheri Hartman, Ph.D., Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, was awarded the 2021 Citizen of the Year by the Roanoke City Council for her work creating several successful programs, including the Community Youth program for at-risk children, Carilion’s Back on Track program, ED Bridge to Treatment program and adult OBOT programs among others.
Douglas Grider, M.D., Dominion Pathology Associates, Varun Kesar, M.D. and Seo Hyun Kim, co-published "A Rare Case of Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis Isolated in the Muscularis Propria of the Small Bowel" in Cureus in October.
Dr. Grider, Mariana Phillips, M.D., Chief of Dermatology, Sarah Simpson, M.D., and Parth Vaidya co-published "Unusual Case of a Caruncular Oncocytoma” in the American Journal of Dermatopathology in December. Dr. Grider also published "Urticarial vasculitis: A potential signpost for multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children" in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology in February.
Karina Miller, D.D.S., Pediatric Dentistry, was recently elected as liaison from the Virginia Association of Pediatric Dentistry to the Southeastern Society of Pediatric Dentistry, a component of the American Association of Pediatric Dentists.
Joe Moskal, M.D., Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, presented as Co-Chairman for International Congress in Joint Replacement at the 10th Annual Direct Anterior Approach Hip Course at Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation, and Education. He presented as faculty and moderator for both the Orthopaedic Summit Evolving Technologies 2021 and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Ryan Putnam, M.D., Foot and Ankle, provided local community education with his presentation, “Becoming an Orthopaedic Surgeon,” at Salem High School.
Robert Trestman, Ph.D., M.D., Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine gave a presentation on medical marijuana to the Torch Club in December. He also was interviewed by JAMA Medical News on “Association of Major Depressive Symptoms with Endorsement of COVID-19 Vaccine Misinformation Among US Adults.”
Julie Zielinski, M.D., Pediatric Orthopaedics, was named to the Board of Directors and Medical Advisory Board for Camp Holiday Trails, a non-profit camp for children with medical needs based out of Charlottesville, Virginia.
