Joshua Adams, MD, Department of Surgery, Aortic Center, and his team enrolled the region’s first patient in a clinical trial that uses a new device to treat aortic aneurysms in patients with fast-growing aneurysms. Joshua Adams is an associate professor in the VTCSOM surgery department.

Peter Apel, MD, PhD, Hand and Upper Extremity, presented “When Can Patients Safely Drive After Rotator Cuff Repair?” at the 89th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chicago, Illinois. Mandy Atkinson, MD, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, co-published “ALK-positive histiocytosis: a new clinicopathologic spectrum highlighting neurologic involvement and responses to ALK inhibition” in the Blood journal from the American Society of Hematology. Anthony Baffoe-Bonnie, MD, Interim Chief of Infectious Diseases, and Jordan Torres, DO, co-published “Time to Reconsider Hepatitis A Vaccination in Food Handlers: Are We Seeing More Outbreaks and Severe Disease?” in Open Forum Infectious Diseases. Stephanie Lareau, MD, Emergency Medicine, was selected to be the Education Section Editor for the editorial board for the Journal of Wilderness and Environmental Medicine. Joe Moskal, MD, Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, presented as faculty and moderator for the 89th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Chicago, Illinois. He also served as a valuable volunteer for the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and his contributions were acknowledged in the yearly special volunteer issue of the ABOS publication The Diplomate. Joe Moskal is a professor in the orthopaedic surgery department.
Michael Nussbaum, MD, Chair of the Department of Surgery, completed a 32-year tenure as an Associate Examiner, Director, and Senior Director of the American Board of Surgery (ABS) in April. Over that time Dr. Nussbaum administered over 1200 oral board examinations and in 2005-2006 he led the initial development of the ABS maintenance of certification process for all diplomates. Shyam Odeti, MBBS, Chief of Hospital Medicine, was appointed as a faculty member of the Society of Hospital Medicine's Peer-to-Peer Learning Program on COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy, an 18-month program to train hospitalists across the nation and empower them to address vaccine hesitancy in their communities. Jessica Partin, MD, Department of Surgery, Breast Surgery Section, and Patrice M. Weiss, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, were co-editors of the March issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America entitled “Management of Benign and Malignant Breast Disease.” Dr. Partin also published “Special Considerations in Patients with Early-Stage Breast Cancer and Survivors” in Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America. David Salzberg, MD, Department of Surgery, General Surgery Section, completed his 1000th Da Vinci robotic operation on April 29. Dr. Salzberg is the first Carilion surgeon to achieve this benchmark. David Salzberg is an associate professor in the surgery department.
Robert Trestman, PhD, MD, Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, was reappointed to his position as Chair of the American Psychiatric Association Council on Healthcare Systems and Financing. In March, he presented to the Carilion annual spring symposium on telemedicine and appeared on the addiction panel discussion for the Shenandoah Club’s Business and Public Affairs speaker series. He was also interviewed on a podcast for the American Society for Neurochemistry and was co-editor for the Psychiatric Clinics of North America volume, “COVID 19: How the Pandemic Changed Psychiatry for Good.” Robert Trestman is a professor in the psychiatry and behavioral medicine department.
