Position Responsibilities
Dr. Lisa A. Uherick serves as the Chief Well-Being Officer at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, where she leads institutional efforts to support the health, well-being, and resilience of students, residents, fellows, faculty, and staff. In this capacity, she works collaboratively across academic and clinical environments to strengthen a culture of caring, reduce systemic barriers to wellness, and develop programs that foster connection, professional fulfillment, and thriving within the academic health center community. Her work emphasizes both individual support and systems-level improvements to the learning and practice environment.
Professional Background
Dr. Uherick is an experienced pediatric emergency medicine physician with deep commitments to both clinical excellence and the well-being of the healthcare workforce. She joined Carilion Clinic in 2007 as a founding member of the emergency medicine residency program and has maintained an active clinical and leadership role ever since.
Her interest in clinician well-being grew during her clinical work during the COVID-19 pandemic, motivating her to develop programs like Healthy People Heal People to support clinicians, encourage team connection, and address workplace stressors. In her role as Chief Well-Being Officer, Dr. Uherick brings this experience to bear across the medical school and health system, working to decrease burnout, improve the environment for learning and care, and increase joy and resilience in academic medicine.
Dr. Uherick is known for her collaborative approach, her passion for interdisciplinary teaching, and her belief that well-being is essential to professional fulfillment in medicine. She serves as a mentor to learners and colleagues, integrating clinical insight with organizational leadership to enhance the well-being of the communities she serves.
