The Association of Women Surgeons is a not-for-profit educational and professional organization whose mission is to inspire, encourage, and enable  women surgeons to realize their professional and personal  goals.

Membership in the Organization

In the past several years, VTC has not continued our official membership as a chapter of the AWS, but has remained a club that is dedicated to educating students about women in  surgery and connecting them to female physicians in surgical  fields.

Who is involved?

Medical students get to participate in activities with Carilion physicians and residents that are interested in being involved in events. Carilion is luckily filled with passionate women surgeons that are excited to make connections with  medical students.

Past activities

In the past, we have had our Meet & Greet with surgeons and residents at The Green Goat, where you can learn more about their experiences as a woman in medicine, making connections  and explore shadowing and research opportunities, and meet your fellow students that may be interested in surgery!

We hosted events to work on clinical skills, such as suturing clinics with attendings and residents who helped introduce students to basic suturing techniques.

Talks from physicians about their career and life experiences, as well as sessions with fourth year medical students who have  recently applied to surgical residencies and can give advice on  the process.
